Culiacán, city, capital of the state of Sinaloa, northwest of Mexico. Located on the Culiacan River about 50 miles (80 km) inland from the Gulf of California, it sits on a small coastal plain, about 200 feet (60 meters) above sea level. To the east rises the elevated Sierra Madre Occidental. Founded in 1531, Culiacán was an important early base for Spanish expeditions.
